Day Trip to Tetouan from Tangier (Without Guide)

Tetouan: The Architecture of Seville and Granada in the Heart of Morocco

Just 60 km from Tangier, the beautiful Andalusian city of Tetouan awaits. It is famous for its neighbourhoods, whose architecture was brought over from Seville and Granada and can be seen in its houses, crenellated walls and shady squares. The route begins in Moulay El Mehdi Square, known in Spanish colonial times as "La Plaza El Primo". You will continue through the Spanish Ensanche along Mohamed V Avenue, which leads to Hassan II Square, presided over by the Royal Palace. Along the way you can see the Luneta quarter, home to the guesthouse where Sira, the heroine of The Time in Between, stayed. (Optional): You can visit the historic Jewish Quarter and the lively market of dried fruit, nuts and dates. A walk through the narrow lanes will take you into the medina, or Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that reveals more with every step, all the way to the Queen's Gate, Bab Okla.
