The Fortified Jewel of the Moroccan Desert
<p>Ait Ben Haddou is a traditional fortified village in Morocco, famous for its mud-brick architecture and desert setting. Once an important trading post, today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backdrop to many famous films.</p>
Ait Ben Haddou is an ancient ksar (fortified village) in southern Morocco, near the city of Ouarzazate, on the banks of the Ounila River. It is built mainly from adobe, mud and straw, the traditional materials of Berber architecture.
The site stands out for its walls, defensive towers and terraced houses that blend into the desert landscape of the Atlas. For centuries it was an important stopping point for the trade caravans crossing the Sahara laden with salt, gold and spices.
Thanks to its great historical and architectural value, Ait Ben Haddou was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It has also served as the setting for numerous famous films and series, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones and The Mummy.
Today it is one of Morocco's most iconic destinations and an outstanding example of the traditional architecture of the country's south.
