Meknes
The Versailles of Morocco
Imperial city with the majestic Bab Mansour, the Royal Granaries and the ruins of Volubilis.
Meknes was the capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who dreamed of making it the Versailles of North Africa. His legacy includes the monumental Bab Mansour Gate, the vast Royal Granaries and El-Hedim Square.
Less crowded than the other imperial cities, Meknes offers a relaxed and authentic experience. The nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy town of Moulay Idriss round off the visit.
